If you want to learn about World of Warcraft you should read my 6 Plus Reasons for Retirees to Play World of Warcraft post where we talk about retirees gaming with WOW. So without any further delay, let’s get on with World of Warcraft Classes and Specializations.
Your World of Warcraft classes and specializations (spec) define how you play the game — from wielding swords on the frontlines to casting spells from afar. Each class offers a unique playstyle, abilities, and role in group content, allowing players to find a style that fits their personality and pace.
Whether you want to protect your team as a Tank, keep everyone alive as a Healer, or focus purely on dealing damage as DPS (Damage Per Second), the variety of World of Warcraft classes offers incredible depth and variety. With 13 base World of Warcraft classes and multiple specializations per class, there’s truly something for everyone — from casual adventurers to seasoned heroes.
Understanding how these World of Warcraft classes and spec’s work is the first step to creating a character you’ll love — one that fits your preferred playstyle and helps you thrive in the world of Azeroth.
World Of Warcraft Classes And Specs
In World of Warcraft, in addition to the various races you can be, you have a variety of World of Warcraft classes and specializations within those classes that you can play. Typically, each class will have some mix of a tank, healer, and DPS (damage per second) spec. Check out your options below:

Now one thing before you pick your class and spec, be sure you check out your characters racial perks. Each race has some special ability that is a skill beneficial to them. It may be a combat perk or a professional perk. That said, you may or may not care about racial perks. This is WOW – BE WHO YOU WANT TO BE!
Now that you’re ready to pick out a class (you can select a specialization role when you get to level 10), the next thing you’re going to want is a way-cool character name right? My preference is for viking/Nordic names for my Horde toons and for my Alliance toons I usually go with Native American names. I also got toon names like “DeathHippy” and “Puppyfartz.” Having a cool game name goes a long way.
It stands to reason that the specific name spelling you want already exists in the game on the realm you want to play on. If you think a name is “totally bitchin,” you gotta know someone else has had that same thought too. So there is a workaround for this. You can substitute the letters “a”, “A”, “e”, “E”, ‘o”, “O” for example with specials characters like â, ë, or Õ. Good idea ya think? Just search Google for HTML Special Characters. You can usually download these lists as .pdf files and save them for use later.
Now, one last thing before you settle on creating some World of Warcraft characters. You are limited to 60 toons to an account. More than that, you’ll need a second account. All your characters can be on one realm or spread out across several realms. It’s up to you. All my toons, both Alliance and Horde live on the Blackhand realm.
Ready to talk about what’s what with World of Warcraft Classes? Are you excited? LETS DO IT!!!!!
World of Warcraft Classes: Tanks
These are the protectors — they take hits, control enemies, and keep their team safe. Tanks are vital in World of Warcraft dungeons and raids because they control enemy attention (often called aggro), absorbing hits that would otherwise overwhelm the group. They position bosses, gather adds, and manage incoming damage with defensive abilities, ensuring fights remain stable and predictable. Tanks also play a key role in handling mechanics like taunt swaps, movement, and environmental hazards. Without a tank, enemies would quickly tear apart the group, making them the foundation of encounter control and survivability in any group content.
Being a tank means more than just smashing a boss. It’s about being the dungeon or raid leader. A great tank knows the dungeons and can guide their group through the map maze and knows how each boss fights. He also makes sure the group is ready to fight and will talk the group through each boss if necessary.
1. Paladin – World Of Warcraft Classes and Specializations

- Protection – Tank that uses shields and divine power for defense.
- Holy – Healer who uses the Light to restore allies’ health.
- Retribution – Melee DPS wielding holy-powered weapons for judgment and justice.
Protection Paladin is the holy-themed tank specialization for Paladins in World of Warcraft classes. It blends strong mitigation, powerful self-healing, and group support. Prot Paladins use Holy Power to fuel abilities like Shield of the Righteous for armor and Word of Glory for instant healing. They excel at magic mitigation, thanks to abilities like Ardent Defender, Guardian of Ancient Kings, and Divine Shield.
With excellent utility—such as interrupts, blessings, and cleanses—and a proactive playstyle built around frequent defensive uptime, Protection Paladins are known for being durable, versatile tanks who support allies while enduring heavy damage.
Holy Paladin is the plate-wearing, melee-oriented healer specialization for Paladins in World of Warcraft. Known for strong single-target and tank healing, Holy Paladins use Holy Power to cast instant, efficient heals like Word of Glory, while weaving in spells such as Holy Shock, Holy Light, and Flash of Light. Many builds encourage healing from melee range, generating resources through attacks with Crusader Strike and benefiting from powerful cooldowns like Avenging Wrath and Aura Mastery. With excellent survivability, strong utility, and reliable healing throughput, Holy Paladins shine as sturdy frontline healers who provide both protection and potent burst healing.
Retribution Paladin is the holy-infused melee DPS specialization for Paladins in World of Warcraft. Built around Holy Power generation and spenders like Templar’s Verdict and Divine Storm, Retribution delivers bursty, hard-hitting attacks empowered by divine magic. With cooldowns such as Avenging Wrath and strong passive auras, Ret Paladins excel at burst damage, cleave, and sustained pressure. They also bring valuable utility and off-healing, using blessings, crowd control, and defensive tools to support allies. Overall, Retribution is a versatile, impactful melee spec that blends righteous power with heavy, satisfying attacks.
I like playing the Protection spec, although I loathe to run dungeons because I suck at remembering the dungeons maps, I do make a lousy dungeon leader. This spec is fun if you’re running solo content or you have someone in your instance group who can lead the way. I’ve played a Retribution spec before and that’s a great spec too. My current Retribution Pali is Bälian and he is on Blackhand.
2. Death Knight – World Of Warcraft Classes and Specializations

- Blood – Tank spec; uses dark magic and self-healing to survive.
- Frost – Dual-wielding or two-handed melee DPS focused on ice damage.

Blood Death Knight is the self-healing, bruiser-style tank specialization for Death Knights in World of Warcraft. Instead of avoiding damage, Blood DKs take hits intentionally and heal them back, converting incoming damage into resources and survivability.
They use Runic Power and runes to cast abilities like Death Strike, which heals based on recent damage taken, and Bone Shield, which provides steady damage reduction. With strong tools like Vampiric Blood, Dancing Rune Weapon, and Death Grip, Blood DKs excel at self-sustain, control, and managing burst damage, making them durable, reactive tanks with powerful crowd-control and anti-magic capabilities.

With cooldowns like Pillar of Frost and powerful AoE through Remorseless Winter, Frost offers a high-tempo, heavy–burst rotation that excels at cleave damage and sustained pressure through relentless strikes and icy assaults. I prefer the dual-wield Frost spec and going along as DPS.
Unholy Death Knight is the plague-wielding, pet-driven melee DPS specialization for Death Knights in World of Warcraft. It centers on disease management, minion control, and powerful burst windows. Unholy DKs spread Virulent Plague, build up Festering Wounds, and burst them with Scourge Strike while commanding a ghoul and other temporary undead minions. Their major cooldown, Army of the Dead, fuels massive burst damage, especially during Dark Transformation and Unholy Assault windows. Known for its cleave strength, strong execute phase, and iconic bleed effects, Arms delivers a calculated, tactical playstyle centered on precise strikes rather than rapid attacks.
Fury Warrior is the fast-paced, dual-wielding melee DPS specialization for Warriors in World of Warcraft. It emphasizes relentless aggression, rapid attacks, and sustained rage generation. Fury fights with two weapons at once, unleashing abilities like Bloodthirst, Raging Blow, and Rampage to maintain a constant flurry of strikes. With cooldowns such as Recklessness, Fury excels at high-tempo damage, strong cleave, and a smooth, frantic rotation. Known for its self-healing through Bloodthirst and nonstop momentum, Fury delivers a furious, energetic playstyle built around overwhelming enemies with sheer speed and power.
Warriors are an awesome class to play. They’re max fun and do a heck of a lot of damage in a fight. I love a good dual-wield Fury specialized toon. With great gear and weapons and a reasonable amount of the versatility stat, you can pull several mobs and just start whackin and stackin mobs with hardly any damage to yourself.

- Havoc – Fast, agile melee DPS with high mobility.

Overall, it offers a dynamic, fast-paced playstyle built on speed, mobility, and flashy, chaotic attacks.
Demon Hunters are a great class to play. Lot’s of fun and can shred just about everything they fight. While my ultimate favorite class to play is the Destruction Warlock, it’s a toss-up between the Havoc Demon Hunter or Frost Death Knight classes for me.

The spec delivers a rhythmic, celestial-themed playstyle that blends cosmic power with natural magic. Both of my Aliance and Horde Druids are the Balance spec.
Feral Druid is the stealthy, bleed-focused melee DPS specialization for Druids in World of Warcraft. Fighting in cat form, Ferals build Combo Points with abilities like Shred and Rake, then spend them on hard-hitting finishers such as Ferocious Bite and Rip. The spec revolves around maintaining powerful bleeds, managing energy, and striking from stealth for bonus damage. With strong mobility, off-healing options, and the ability to stealth or shapeshift as needed, Feral offers a quick, agile, and methodical playstyle built around precision, sustained damage, and hit-and-run tactics.
World of Warcraft Classes: Healers
Healers keep their team alive with restoration, light, or even spirit energy. Healers are essential in World of Warcraft dungeons and raids because they keep the group alive through unavoidable damage, mistakes, and heavy boss mechanics. They manage health bars, cleanse harmful effects, and use cooldowns to stabilize the party during intense moments. Without healers, tanks would quickly fall, DPS would be overwhelmed by unavoidable damage, and the group couldn’t survive long enough to complete encounters. In short, healers are the backbone of the group, enabling the entire team to push through difficult fights and succeed.
6. Priest – World Of Warcraft Classes and Specializations

Known for its group-wide synergy, burst amplification, and utility, Augmentation delivers a strategic, team-oriented playstyle built around empowering others to reach their full potential.
On a personal note here, I find all the Evoker spec’s somewhat awkward to play. I have an Evoker toon, but for me, it plays weird. Not to put this class down, lemme say that I need to bang this toon out. Spend the time playing it before rendering final judgement. Being a dragon is kinda cool tho…..
World of Warcraft Classes: Damage Dealers (DPS)
These World of Warcraft classes focus purely on dealing damage — either melee or ranged. DPS players are crucial in World of Warcraft dungeons and raids because they provide the damage needed to defeat enemies before the group becomes overwhelmed. They handle mechanics that require killing priority targets quickly, breaking shields, interrupting dangerous casts, and efficiently clearing trash packs. Strong DPS helps shorten fights, reducing the strain on tanks and healers and preventing bosses from reaching enrage timers or unleashing devastating abilities. Without effective DPS, groups can’t progress, making them the driving force behind completing encounters in a timely and controlled manner.
